Here is a brief summary of some of the things that I have learned in each of the classes I have taken during the MSA program:

ADM 510: Advanced Technical Communication

This course helped me to further develop my writing skills in many ways. I learned how to assess my audience to assure that I was using the correct format and style to suite my reader as well as to write clear and concisely. I practiced these skills as I wrote a memo, a brochure, an informative report, and a proposal.

ADM 511: Interpersonal Communication Skills

During this communication course, I learned more about myself and my communication style. I learned about how listening styles, prejudices, and habits affect our communication and what we can do to make ourselves more aware of this inhibitors in order to communicate more effectively. I also learned that active listening and thinking and the words I use and way I phrase statements can make a difference in way I communicate my thoughts to others.

ADM 514: Benefit-Cost Analysis

This course taught me a lot about analyzing the costs and benefits of projects to determine if they would be beneficial to undertake. I learned the skills and formulas needed to determine if a project would have positive net benefits and the knowledge of how to determine what would be best for my company. The things learned in the course include present and future values of projects, how to achieve efficiency, how to determine market equilibrium, how to deal with subsidies and surpluses, the Consumer Price Index, and real and nominal interest rates.

ADM 515: Project Management

This course helped me to learn and understand how to manage projects from start to finish. As we worked on one project through the entire course, we were able to take it through all the necessary steps plan the project with objects and an achievable timeline, developing a work breakdown structure, task assignment matix, task duration table, project network diagram, and project budget chart. This process help me to learn how to effective manage any project while staying on budget and within the necessary timeline.

ADM 520: Quantitative Decision Making

This course helped to give me a deeper understanding of statistics and how statistical data analysis can be used to help me solve problems, carry out research, and develop models. I learned different ways of collecting and organizing data as well as many different calculations and ways to analysis data in order to make proposals or decisions.

ADM 525: Human Resource Management Foundation

This course has given me a greater understanding of area of human resources. I have learned about human resources, how they are changing, and how to have strategic human resource management planning. I have also learned a lot about the legal issues surrounding human resources and the many aspects that must be taking into account such as equal opportunities, global issues, and health and safety issues. I have gained a greater knowledge of the decisions and strategies that must go into every aspect of human resource management, including compensation and benefits that will be offered to employees.

ADM 527: Contracting and Outsourcing

I learned a lot in this course about staying at a competitive advantage and looking into a company to determine their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, studying the risks of an organization and learning the steps to contracting and outsourcing if this is one of the ways the company can improve. I learned the process of how to determine all of the individual processes of a company and how to determine which ones, if any, would be beneficial to the company if they were outsourced. From these determinations, I leaned how to decide what the goals and strategies will be needed to accomplish the outsourced process and who to go about gathering and selecting a provider for the outsourcing.

ADM 600: Organizational Structure and Processes

This course taught me a lot about organizations and especially about the organization that I work in. I learned about how organizations develop and change over time and how employees and supervisors and can help the organization to better adapt to these changes. I learned about individual’s behavior and how it affect the processes and communication within an organization as well as its affect on the culture of an organization. Most of all, I was able to apply this information to determine the organizational culture that I work in and how I feel that our organization can make changes in order to improve and meet the challenges it is currently facing.

ADM 690: Capstone

My capstone project and portfolio have helped me to realize all of the skills and knowledge that I have gained during this Master’s program. I am proud to see what I have accomplished and how my views and thoughts have changed and developed as I have completed each of my courses.
